  15. To Keg or Not to Keg?

  17. <p>     It has been the centerpiece of countless late-night dormitory
  18. parties. But the enduring popularity of the venerable beer
  19. half-keg has led dozens of colleges to ban its use in an effort
  20. to curb campus alcohol abuse. This year Princeton University
  21. banished the container, concluding that underage undergraduates
  22. will find it more difficult to purchase the same amount of beer
  23. in cans and bottles from local liquor stores. But many
  24. Princeton alumni have opposed the ban, explaining in a letter
  25. that bottles and cans were "more likely...to cause injury"
  26. than a plastic keg cup.

  28. <p>     Meanwhile, Princeton's neighbor to the north, Cook College
  29. of Rutgers University, has tapped into a different idea:
  30. encouraging the use of kegs. Students who want to host campus
  31. parties must attend a seminar on responsible drinking and
  32. register a keg with the school before serving the brew. Rut gers
  33. officials acknowledge that the policy was drawn up only after
  34. concluding that it was virtually impossible to keep track of the
  35. cans and bottles students had secretly stashed away. Under the
  36. new restrictions, says Lee Schneider, the dean in charge of
  37. monitoring the plan, "students will act responsibly and take
  38. responsibility for others."
